The University of Arizona

Recycling Materials

Challenge

As Arizona's population has grown, the amount of waste generated has increased even faster. The consequences of our disposable life style include dwindling landfill space, risks to groundwater quality, and wasted energy. The challenge is for the University of Arizona to operate in a manner that significantly reduces our waste stream, enhances markets for recycled materials, and pursues a relevant research agenda.

Goals

  • To provide efficient, cost-effective recycling services to the campus community.
  • To divert as much material from landfills as possible, therefore saving on disposal costs and earning revenue.
  • To obtain materials closer to their end destination.
  • To buy more supplies made from recycled materials.
