By supporting UAFM's ongoing efforts to strategically address energy and water efficiency and sustainability initiatives across campus and maximized facility performance, the addition of the Commissioning and Analytics Specialist to the Facilities Management Energy Management team would be crucial to campus goals. Under the general supervision of the Director of Utility Services, the Commissioning and Analytics Specialist will collaborate with and report to the Campus Energy Manager. They will be directly responsible for monitoring and responding to Fault Detection and Diagnostics and Energy Information Systems, building energy auditing, building commissioning and retro-commissioning, systems test and balance, and working with student organizations and university stakeholders on energy and water issues. The expert's input will be crucial in creating UAFM strategies for efficient and methodical retro-commissioning and efficiency initiatives in campus buildings.
This position would be geared toward continuing to address efficiency in water and energy consumption, as more than 50% of campus electricity is currently provided from renewable sources thanks to a partnership with a local utility provider. The initial funding from CSF would help make this role possible.
The individual hired for this position has been crucial in major projects such as the new construction of Applied Research Building, Grand Challenges Research Building, and the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine. Their efforts were also key in the retrofit of existing facilities including the main Student Recreation Center, CAPLA and more. They have also increased the department's ability to effectively engage with interested students. They also supported a student-led initiative to relamp the Harvill building as well as another student effort to make Koffler more water-efficient; both projects were funded by the Campus Sustainability Fund.
At the close of the final year of this three-grant award, this individual's work has been at such a high level that they have been promoted to the new role of Energy Engineer, where they will be responsible for the planning, direction, and execution of a variety of campus efficiency initiatives such as a campus-wide energy auditing program and retro-commissioning program. The current Utilities Analyst has in turn applied for and been awarded the role of Commissioning & Analytics Specialist.
