Project Description

El Día del Agua y la Atmósfera (El Día) is a student-led research symposium that kicks off Earth Week. The event was planned, organized, and hosted by students of the Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences (HAS) for the entire University of Arizona student community on March 22, 2022 (World Water Day) in ENR2. El Día 2022 - titled ‘Our Water, Our Air’ -  explored links between hydrology & atmospheric science and pressing social challenges, with a specific focus on the arid southwest via student research presentations, keynote panel with 7 speakers across 3 events, outreach into the Tucson K-12 community, and student-run website. For the first time in 3 years, El Dia 2022 was a fully hybrid (virtual and in-person) event post-pandemic with waived registration fees for all participants to make the conference accessible for students.

Project Outcomes

Spring 2022's event was a success with over 150 students, faculty, community members, and potential employers in attendance. Posters created by over 60 student presenters from across the College of Science on hydrological and atmospheric science issues were displayed.

The El Día del Agua y la Atmósfera event was led by 7 students in Hydrology and Atmospheric sciences and their 2 advisors. 155 registrations were submitted for this event, out of the approximately 2,000 people it was marketed to. 65 students, 15 professors, and 60 staff/ community members/ sponsors attended the symposium. Seven speakers were brought to present, as well as 55 students who were able to use this opportunity to present their research. Over the course of the event, these students received over 20 awards and prizes for their work.
