In its third iteration, Students for Sustainability (SFS) held their annual Earth Day week and Sustainability Summit. While most events the groups put on are focused on lighthearted activities, SFS felt there was a lack of heavy emphasis on education. It is their intention that the Sustainability Summit can bridge this gap through a four-hour educational event covering topics under the themes of business, advocacy, science, and art. By including 2 speakers and at least 15 tabling organizations, their hope is to reach a much bigger audience than in previous years, provide educational outreach to the student body on these topics, and introduce mindfulness and awareness of issues surrounding sustainability and the environment.
The 2024 Sustainability Summit was a success. During the event, 150+ students were reached throughout the 4 hours. The summit's tabling section included 15 student and community-led organizations such as Cero, Biosphere 2, Compost Cats, etc. Each tabling organization reported a strong level of engagement with students from different majors. The speaking portion of the summit included 2 speakers; Linda Robles from Environmental Justice Task Force and Moises Gomez from Local First AZ. The Summit was able to reach the student body and inform them about various sustainable organizations around Tucson while providing educational opportunities through the 2 speakers.
