The Students for Sustainability Garden Committee, in collaboration with the Office of Sustainability and the University of Arizona Facilities Management, will install an outdoor utility sink and a water bottle refill station at the University of Arizona Community Garden, situated at 1400 E. Mabel St. The water bottle refill station will provide a source of clean drinking water at the UACG, where there are currently no potable water sources. The utility sink will be utilized for hand sanitation as well as washing produce cultivated and collected at the UACG. This would help the Garden's continued produce donation efforts to the UArizona Campus Pantry while also reducing the possibility of disease-causing viruses, parasites, and fungi that may dwell in garden soil or dirt. The development of these amenities will strengthen the UACG's ability to provide sustainability-focused programs to both community members and students.
Facilities Management successfully installed both components of the project, which has greatly benefited the garden. Produce can now easily be cleaned on-site, which allowed the project team to clean and donate 10 pounds of produce to Campus Pantry.
While 5 students were part of the core project team, 8 students helped the project to come to fruition, putting in over 50 hours of time on the project.
