Organized by a member of Students for Sustainability, Project Rethink Climate offers the opportunity for 120 students to attend a field trip to Biosphere 2 at no cost, starting in January of 2023. This opportunity will highlight research at Biosphere 2 that seeks solutions to the climate crisis and environmental sustainability while also informing students about other research and advocacy opportunities on campus and in the community to provide a new and positive way to interact with climate research.
At the heart of this project is the intent to provide educational outreach at Biosphere 2 through an interactive, visual, and, most importantly, tangible experience. Through hands-on education, Project Rethink Climate will provide an excellent opportunity to address social inequities and advance social sustainability. With CSF’s assistance, the project is able to provide free tickets and transportation for the Biosphere 2 trip. Its ultimate goal is twofold. First, alleviating the fear regarding climate change, and second, promoting advocacy and participation as a proactive approach to working on socially just environmental projects.
In the spring semester, 80 students attended a field trip to the Biosphere 2 and participated in facilitated conversations with Students for Sustainability volunteer trip leaders.
Students reported having a more positive outlook on climate change after the tour and discussion. One survey response read: "Thanks for being an amazing guide for the tour. I really enjoyed it. It was the best experience I've had in a long time... It was a lifetime experience."
