Initiative ID
4.4

This initiative proposes to analyze the university’s course meeting schedules to identify opportunities for reducing campus commuting through strategic adjustments. By conducting surveys, interviews, and focus groups with students, faculty, and advisors, we aim to explore potential changes that could minimize daily travel. This approach will evaluate if optimizing the course schedule can reduce carbon emissions while maintaining or enhancing academic performance and engagement. Actionable items include:

  • Conduct a statistical analysis of current course meeting schedules to identify opportunities for reducing commuting.
  • Survey and interview students, faculty, and advisors to gather insights on potential schedule adjustments and their impact.
  • Explore options such as condensed class schedules, hybrid learning, staggered schedules, and block scheduling to reduce commuting and energy use.
  • Evaluate the benefits of scheduling more classes on specific days and clustering classes to optimize building usage and reduce emissions.
