The Bike Ready Wildcats project is assisting Parking and Transportation Services (PTS) with the repair, maintenance, and upgrading of four self-service bike repair stations located throughout campus, each of which would be fully stocked with the supplies required for minor bike repairs. This project will help impact the planning and development of bike facilities for the thousands of Wildcats who bike to campus every day, while also keeping unneeded material out of the landfill.
The Campus Sustainability Fund is subsidizing the relocation of bike repair stations to more visible and high-traffic places to make use of the additional benefits of enhanced lighting and proximity to emergency Blue light phones. This would reduce the possibility of bike theft and vandalism on campus. This project aims to be a catalyst in realizing UArizona's goal of carbon neutrality by 2040. Commuters to campus created more than 13% of the University's total carbon dioxide emissions in 2019, and the Bike Ready Wildcats project aims to encourage individuals to improve their behavior by making cycling a more appealing option for commuters.
Three bike stations were successfully relocated to more trafficked areas to maximize station usage while one location was refurbished.
The new stations are now located outside of the Honors Village, the Main Library, Coronado Dorm, and Likins Dorm. Each station also now has QR codes for users to interact with, either to learn how to use the tools or to report a problem. By adding features like this, the program can dedicate time to repairing any stations that may be in need of a new part or damaged. Parking and Transportation Services will continue to maintain the stations to ensure quality tools for users.
