Project Description

Leave No Trace (LNT) is the principal organization that promotes and educates individuals on the skills and techniques they may use to reduce their environmental effects when participating in outdoor activities. LNT, which has been officially endorsed by all of the nation's leading land managers and outdoor recreation organizations, serves as an educational tool for teaching students on campus about building traceless campfires, sustainable campsite selection and use, proper waste disposal, and how to reduce the social impacts of outdoor recreation.

Initial funding from the Campus Sustainability Fund supported various levels of LNT training for UA students and staff, allowing them to serve as leaders and educators at no cost. Using a “Train-The-Trainer” method, the Coordinator for Outdoor Recreation completed a Leave No Trace Master Trainer course, allowing them to then train all Outdoor Recreation staff.

Opening up the opportunity to students, Campus Recreation then offered two types of training modalities: a classroom training series, and a backcountry training weekend. Both of these LNT training opportunities result in a Leave No Trace Trainer certification and are hosted at no cost for University of Arizona students.

Project Outcomes

Over the course of this project, 80 cumulative hours of LNT training were completed through classroom series and backcountry training weekends.

A total of 78 people were trained through workshops, in which 100% of students reported that their personal goals and objectives for the course were met.
