Project Description

In 2023, Outdoor Recreation launched their Bike Rental Program to support accessible, safe, and sustainable modes of transportation for students across campus. By 2025, the Bike Rental Program's entire fleet had been rented during each of the previous three semesters, proving that students were highly interested in renting lower-cost bikes and necessitating an expansion of the program!

The Campus Sustainability Fund will support the purchase of an additional 25 bikes for the Bike Shop’s rental fleet and outfit all bikes with kickstands, helmets, and locks. Student employees will also receive bike maintenance training. These investments will allow the Bike Rental Program team to advance their mission of providing available, accessible, and low effort bikes for students, increasing transportation alternatives on campus.

Project Outcomes

Outdoor Recreation’s Bike Rental Program continued to experience demand for affordable and sustainable transportation options, with all 75 fleet bikes rented out during the Fall semester. During the academic year, the program recorded 40 full-year rentals and 63 semester rentals. Compared to the 2024–2025 academic year, 50% more students were able to rent bikes through the program. The team also purchased 10 mountain bikes, expanding U of A students’ access to outdoor recreation opportunities in the Sonoran Desert.

Additionally, four student staff members further developed their bike mechanic skills through maintenance training opportunities. Together, these efforts continue to expand sustainable transportation access and outdoor education opportunities for U of A students.
