Project Description

On April 21st, immediately before Earth Day, ASUA's Students for Sustainability hosted Environmental Summit as part of their annual Earth Week event. The Environmental Summit featured six Arizonan speakers as well as fourteen tabling organizations from the University of Arizona campus and the larger Tucson community to raise awareness about ongoing concerns in the fields of sustainability and environmental justice. The summit, which included a student science fair, highlighted ongoing research and projects in various fields that seek to address sustainability and environmental justice issues while also providing a platform for a diverse array of marginalized voices, including queer and BIPOC individuals and organizations.

The Campus Sustainability Fund sponsored SFS with equipment and shade for the tabling organizations and an honorarium for Chelsea Chee, a Native Renewables representative from Northern Arizona.

The event was covered by Susan Barnett of The Daily Wildcat. Click here to read the article - What Earth Week looks like at the university - The Daily Wildcat

Project Outcomes

The core project planning team of ten students was able to engage over 345 students from the University of Arizona campus, making this the largest event that Students for Sustainability has ever held, especially as an event focused on environmental and social justice. Through 6 keynote speakers and tabling organizations, they reached approximately 345 students and members of the campus community on topics related to sustainability and Indigenous voices in environmentalism.
