Project Description

The Sustainable Orchard project works towards expanding the previously funded Sustainable Citrus Plus and Enhancement of the Sustainable Fruit Orchard. Led by Dr. Recsetar and student interns, the Sustainable Orchard has used sustainable practices such as rainwater harvesting, aquaponics integration, soil moisture analysis, and comprehensive fruit tree maintenance protocols to provide fruit to the Campus Pantry.

This project will add three new trees to the orchard and increase moisture monitoring for stone and citrus trees to reduce overwatering. It will also install fence gates and separate irrigation zones to minimize the water used while maximizing fruit production. Additionally, a student manager will be hired to oversee the orchard during the winter and harvest the stone fruits. Educational materials will be distributed with the donated fruit to explain the sustainable practices employed in production. A sign will also be established outside of the sustainable orchard, allowing students and members of the community to read about and observe the results of the orchard.

An orange tree sits in a round planter in front of desert vegetation, another orange tree, and a green barn.
