Project Description

This cross-campus initiative will plant native, drought-tolerant trees in strategic locations across campus to increase shade availability in pedestrian and bike-commuting areas, reduce urban heat, and create more inviting outdoor social spaces. The University of Arizona’s Landscape Architect will lead the planning and site selection with support from University Facility Services (UFS) and the Office of Sustainability. Student volunteers will assist with planting days, encouraging increased environmental awareness and applied learning opportunities. The initiative will culminate in an Arbor Day event to bring students, faculty, and staff together to celebrate increased shade on campus!

Project Outcomes

Throughout the 2025-2026 academic year, the project team successfully planted 60 native, 25-gallon drought-tolerant trees, all located in campus pedestrian, bike-commuting, and social areas across campus to maximize shade impact. Planting sites included areas outside the Koffler Building, the Applied Research Building walkway, west of Civil Engineering, and outside the Modern Languages Building. More than 50 student volunteers participated in the planting events, including many members of the Epsilon Eta Environmental Honors Fraternity. As the trees mature, the project is expected to increase the campus shade canopy by more than 6,000 square feet.

The celebratory Arbor Day event brought together student volunteers, project partners, and campus leadership to recognize the initiative’s contributions to campus sustainability efforts. Over time, these planted trees will create cooler walking routes and gathering spaces while helping reduce solar exposure and surface temperatures across campus.
