4.5

This initiative proposes to close select interior streets on the University of Arizona main campus to private vehicle traffic, transforming them into pedestrian and bike-friendly corridors. By implementing these closures and collaborating with the City of Tucson to manage traffic on campus perimeters, the university aims to enhance safety, efficiency, and comfort for alternative modes of transportation. By ensuring that cyclists, walkers, and drivers alike have safe and reliable routes to the university, the University of Arizona can meet transportation needs while placing an emphasis on equity. Actionable items include:

  • Close identified interior campus streets to private vehicle traffic while preserving circulation for emergency vehicles, maintenance, Cat Tran, and accessibility needs, with exceptions for specific events like dorm move-ins and move-outs.
  • Design and implement Complete Streets guidelines for redesigned corridors, prioritizing human-scale design over vehicle-oriented infrastructure, akin to the successful redesign of North Warren Ave.
  • Collaborate with the City of Tucson to address traffic calming measures on campus edges, enhance connections for pedestrians and cyclists crossing major roadways, and explore the feasibility of purchasing adjacent rights-of-way to expand the campus planning boundary.
