Establish a Cap for the Total Number of Parking Spaces on Campus
Sustainability Commitment
Transportation Mode Shift
Initiative ID
4.8
This initiative proposes to cap the number of parking spaces on the University of Arizona main campus, redirecting avoided construction funds towards Transportation Demand Management (TDM) strategies and alternative transportation infrastructure. Building new parking structures is costly, both financially and in terms of land use, which could otherwise be utilized for educational, research, residential, or community purposes. By prioritizing TDM initiatives over expanding parking capacity, the university aims to promote sustainable transportation choices, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and foster a cultural shift towards alternative commuting modes. Actionable items include:
- Create and enforce a university-wide policy to limit the total number of assignable parking spaces on main campus to 15,000.
- Develop and implement robust Transportation Demand Management (TDM) strategies tailored to the University of Arizona community, including incentives for carpooling, public transit subsidies, and bike infrastructure improvements.
- Enhance campus shuttle services and other alternative modes of transportation and promote their use among students, staff, and faculty to reduce the need for personal vehicle commuting.
- Collaborate with local government and transportation authorities to improve connectivity between campus and surrounding neighborhoods, ensuring accessible and sustainable transportation options for the university community.
