This initiative proposes to address the University of Arizona's colonial legacy and current practices by examining its land holdings and developing reparative measures that align with state and federal laws, and the university's mission and values. By engaging with Indigenous communities and leveraging internal and external expertise, this effort aims to create a model for other land-grant institutions to follow in addressing their colonial legacies and fostering genuine reconciliation and sustainability. Actionable items include:
- Collaborate with the Office of Native American Advancement, Initiatives, & Research, the Indigenous Peoples’ Law & Policy Program, and other relevant partners to build upon the University of Arizona Land Grant Project, further identifying current uses and revenue generated as well as associated costs and emissions generated.
- Review state laws and policies governing land trust management and revenue distribution to identify opportunities for advocacy and reform.
- Develop policy recommendations to enhance transparency, equitable revenue distribution, and sustainable land use practices.
