Waste Reduction
Initiative ID
3.5

This initiative proposes to expand the University of Arizona's Surplus Property Services to increase material reuse, reduce landfill waste, and establish a campus thrift store accessible to all community members. By adapting its mission and forming strategic partnerships, the program can handle more material streams, offer a closed-loop system for move-out waste, and enhance electronics recycling and creative reuse. Actionable items include:

  • Establish an on-campus Surplus Storefront for smaller items such as furniture, office supplies, and clothes, ensuring affordability and accessibility for all campus community members.
  • Expand Surplus' role in the annual dorm move-out program, Dodge the Dumpster, to divert more waste from landfills and provide students with needed goods at the start of the school year.
  • Develop a centralized electronics and hard-to-recycle materials (HRMs) recycling location, with easy access and expanded collection points across campus.
  • Partner with departments like Art, Theater, Film & Television, and Architecture to encourage the creative reuse of bulk materials and promote the use of recycled materials in student projects.
