This initiative proposes to achieve an 85% reduction in main campus fleet vehicle emissions by 2035, with a focus on transitioning to low or no-emission vehicles. The goal is to potentially eliminate the remaining 15% of emissions by 2040 or offset them, aiming to reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions to around 365 MTCDE. By centralizing fleet management and implementing purchasing standards for electric vehicles (EVs), the university aims to significantly reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality on campus. Actionable items include:
- Conduct a comprehensive inventory of all main campus and statewide university-owned vehicles to assess fuel usage, age, and efficiency, incorporating an equity analysis of the transition to EVs.
- Develop a phased plan to replace high-emission vehicles with low or no-emission options, starting with heavily used vehicles like Cat Tran buses, University Facility Services trucks, and University Police vehicles.
- Establish purchasing standards requiring all university departments to procure low or no-emission vehicles, with Parking & Transportation Services and Motor Pool potentially serving as centralized buyers to streamline the transition process.
- Replace all golf carts and off-road utility vehicles with EV alternatives to reduce local emissions and noise pollution, while exploring centralized purchasing and rental services for better control and efficiency.
- Expand the EV charging network in collaboration with Parking and Transportation Services and University Facilities Services to support the growing fleet of electric vehicles and ensure equitable access across campus.
