This initiative proposes to direct all solid landfill waste from the University of Arizona's Main Campus to the City of Tucson Los Reales Sustainability Campus, where emissions can be captured and utilized for energy production. By adjusting waste management contracts and optimizing landfill practices, the University aims to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with landfill waste. This strategy aligns with Project Drawdown's recommendations and could lead to a substantial reduction in landfill-related emissions. Actionable items include:
- Amend contracts to ensure all Main Campus landfill waste is sent to the Los Reales Sustainability Campus for gas capture and energy production.
- Require that waste from the Phoenix Bioscience Core is disposed of in a landfill with gas capture and flaring/reuse capabilities.
- Collaborate with waste haulers to implement and enforce these new waste disposal requirements.
- Monitor and report on the greenhouse gas emissions reductions achieved through these changes to ensure compliance and effectiveness.
- Align this initiative with BE 19 goals to reduce solid waste production and increase diversion from the landfill by 2040.
