Project Description

The University of Arizona’s Epsilon Eta fraternity creates a collaborative and networking environment that empowers members to pursue their postgraduate plans in environmental fields while fostering an awareness of the intrinsic relationship between people and their environment through academics, professional development, service, and community. This student-led project will create a rainwater garden on the west side of the Civil Engineering building to capture and filter rainwater runoff from Tucson storms, reducing local flooding while recharging groundwater. Additionally, it will help prevent pollutants from contaminating the watershed, reduce flooding in the adjacent parking lot, and promote biodiversity within the garden. In the garden, native edible and medicinal plants will be planted with the advice of Martha Burgess, an adjunct professor at Tohono O’odham Community College.  

Epsilon Eta will be collaborating with Tucson Clean and Beautiful and interacting with Watershed Management group’s rainwater harvesting workshops as well to ensure the project’s success. Two student leaders will lead the project with opportunities for Epsilon Eta members to volunteer to help complete the garden. QR code plaques will be placed around the garden to link to the Epsilon Eta website where users can find a list of plants in the garden, learn about how the plants were traditionally used along with recipes, see interviews from native voices, and report wildlife sightings in the garden. 

Project Outcomes

Through multi-partner coordination and four highly attended volunteer workdays, the team installed more than 50 native plants, including five new trees.

The team collaborated with Tucson Clean and Beautiful in the planning and design phase, analyzing how water flowed through the site before any earthwork began to ensure the physical changes best complemented the site. Volunteers created rock basins, built berms, and built a Zuni bowl to capture stormwater based on the site’s natural water flow. Complementary curb cuts along the sidewalk allow additional water from the adjacent parking lot to flow into the garden, while rock overflows help direct excess water through the site.

Once earthwork was completed, volunteers planted trees and shrubs in and next to the basin. Altogether, the four workdays drew 86 volunteers, who contributed physical labor to make the project possible, while also learning about landscape design and water green storm infrastructure in the process.

These features will help reduce flooding in the adjacent parking lot, increase water infiltration, and improve the likelihood that newly established plants can eventually thrive without irrigation. The collaborative approach taken by Epsilon Eta created meaningful educational opportunities for over 80 participants and strengthened new relationships, both off and on campus. 

Over the long term, the rainwater garden will reduce flooding in surrounding areas, support native wildlife, and promote biodiversity on campus.
