The University of Arizona has been recognized as one of the nation’s top green power users, ranking No. 10 on the EPA’s Top 30 College & University list as part of the Green Power Partnership. This voluntary program, established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), supports organizations in procuring renewable energy to reduce environmental impacts and advance the market for clean power.
As a Green Power Partner, the University of Arizona annually uses 140+ million kilowatt-hours of green power, accounting for more than 60% of our total electricity consumption. This achievement was made possible through our Large-Scale Renewable Energy Agreement with Tucson Electric Power (TEP), which ensures that all grid-based electricity for the university comes from renewable sources. The energy sourced through this agreement from wind and solar farms has helped cut the university’s greenhouse gas emissions by nearly one-third, the equivalent of removing 14,000 cars from the road annually.
Since joining the EPA Green Power Partnership in 2021, we have consistently ranked among the top 10 colleges and universities for green power usage. This recognition highlights the impact of the university’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, climate action, and innovative partnerships. As the university continues to expand our renewable energy initiatives, we remain dedicated to reducing our emissions, advancing climate resiliency, and setting new standards for sustainability in higher education.
